• OMISSION: The killing of Fatima, the 7-year-old girl found dead in Mexico City, showcases a tragedy of errors, where local prosecutors rejected the family’s original complaint and where her school allowed an unknown woman to pick up her up. Moreover social services had investigated potential abuse since 2015.
• FAILURE: “If Fátima is not with us today, it is because the protocols that were to be followed were not followed. It was because the institutions did not give the attention they should have given”, said Sonia López, aunt of Fátima. Meanwhile, Mexico City was shocked by the murder.
• REWARD: After being pummeled by public opinion due to Fátima’s case, the Mexico City Attorney General launched a USD 107,000 reward in case someone can identify an adult woman who may have to retrieve Fatima on the night of February 11 from school.
• MORE: Yesterday, three more women were found dead, in separate cases, in three different Mexican states: Guerrero (in the Pacific Coast), Guanajuato and Hidalgo (in Central Mexico). At least 976 cases of alleged femicides occurred in 2019 with Veracruz leading the group.
