• DOMINANCE: State-owned oil company Pemex remains the main player in the Mexican fuel retail industry with at least 80% of total service stations in the country still operating under the Pemex brand, according to the latest numbers from Mexico’s fuel retailers’ association (ONEXPO).

• YEARS: Stemming from the country’s landmark energy sector reform, private companies were allowed to enter the Mexican fuel retail market in 2016. According to ONEXPO, Pemex retains control of the market with 10,081 service stations under its brand of the total 12,551.

• PRIVATE: Private companies with the largest number of service stations operating in Mexico are BP (423), Exxon Mobil (336), Repsol (257), Shell (220), Total (187) Chevron (184). The latest player to enter the market was Texas-based Valero opening its first store in the Guadalajara area this year.

• INVESTMENT: “This year…we intend to invest 15 billion pesos (USD 802 million). This would be a historic investment in the retail gas service industry, more than triple compared to the one made in 2019”, said last week Roberto Díaz de León, head of ONEXPO.
