• DEAL: Japanese conglomerate Kawasaki has landed a real estate deal to build a new motorcycle engine plant in the Monterrey metro area of northern Mexico with the goal of exporting products to the US market, several sources told Grupo Reforma.
• MONTERREY: Kobe and Tokyo-based Kawasaki has not officially confirmed the deal. When asked about it, the Nuevo León state government did not deny it. According to real estate sources, the facility will be a 216 square feet plant at the Interpuerto Monterrey Industrial Park.
• BUILT-TO-SUIT: “The information we’ve got is that they will create a built-to-suit facility. They will build it to measure. And we know that the goal is to produce to export to the US”, a real estate source with knowledge of the transaction told Grupo Reforma.
• COMPETITORS: Back in 1988, Honda Motor was the first Japanese manufacturer to arrive in Mexico to open a motorcycle plant in Jalisco state. In 1991, Yamaha Motor Company opened its own motorcycle assembly plant in the Mexico City metro area.
