• INTERCONNECT: A 10-mile long project expected to connect the Mayakan pipeline in the Yucatan peninsula to Mexico’s main gas transmission network, (SISTRANGAS), is expected to ease the daily 300 million cubic feet shortfall the region faces for industry and power generation.

• UTILITY: Developed by French conglomerate Engie -which has a controlling share in the Mayakan pipeline- the interconnection project will be completed by August and will mostly serve Mexico’s state-owned utility CFE plan to open a new combined-cycle power plant near Mérida.

• INDUSTRY: “Gas not only allows the establishment of new combined-cycle power plants but also allows the development of the industries that need this hydrocarbon”, said Paul Sánchez, analyst at Ombudsman Energía México, who said other options should be explored, including renewables.

• TOURISM: In addition to CFE’s 493 megawatts (MW) combined-cycle power plant in the capital city of Mérida in Yucatán state, the López Obrador administration is considering to build a similar size power station in the Riviera Maya tourist area of neighboring Quintana Roo.
