• WAITING: Hundreds of seniors in the medium-size municipality of García in northern Mexico spent the night in queues waiting for a chance to be vaccinated against coronavirus. Part of the greater Monterrey metro area, García has 247,000 residents but only 9,700 doses available so far.
• NUMBERS: As of late Thursday, García reported 4,916 coronavirus cases and 166 deaths. Compared to other municipalities in the Monterrey metro area, García has a lower number of fatal coronavirus victims. So far, vaccination in García is focused on elderly residents (above 60%).
• OVERNIGHT: “When I knew there were a lot of people (in line) I said: ‘Let’s go now because if not, I won’t get it!’ “, said María del Consuelo Téllez, a 66-year-old resident of García waiting outside a vaccination site. “The plan is to wait here until tomorrow, some neighbors are accompanying me”.
• TRICKERY: The announcement that García would be the first municipality in greater Monterrey to receive and administer the coronavirus vaccine caused waiting lines to extend for blocks yesterday. Authorities believe that residents from nearby municipalities resorted to tricks to try to get vaccinated.
