• TOLL: The number of Mexican health workers who have died from coronavirus has now surpassed 3,000, putting Mexico well ahead among countries in the Americas with more medical fatalities since the beginning of the pandemic, government figures show.

• NUMBERS: Coronavirus deaths among health personnel increased between late December and late January as Mexico confronted the worst phase of the pandemic. Among the total 3,147 health workers fatal victims, 941 of them were hospital orderlies and hospital social workers.

• SYSTEM: “Among our workers (in our institution)…755 have died. If we take into account the 86,000 (cases) this means a lethality of less than one percent. This is similar to the international level”, said Victor Hugo Borja, an official at IMSS which manages hospitals for workers in the formal economy.

•AMERICAS: Earlier this month, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) put Mexico at the top of health workers fatalities in the Americas with the US a distant second with 1,347. In September, Amnesty International said Mexico was the country in the planet in the same category.
