• GROWTH: Bicycle sales in Mexico increased by 30 percent in 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic, early industry estimates show. Like in other parts of the world, the boom in Mexican bicycle sales was fueled by concerns about public transportation and a growing interest in exercise.
• IMPULSE: “The issue of the pandemic was definitely the main impulse (for sales), because people look for ease in commuting, to maintain social distancing and exercise at the same time”, said Fernando Mejía, the president of Mexico’s National Association of Bicycle Producers (ANAFABI).
• INDUSTRY: With China consistently displacing local bicycle manufacturers since 2005, Mexican producers expect that production could return to levels not seen since 2015. According to ANAFABI, domestic production of bicycles in Mexico reached 1.2 million units in 2019.
• IMPORTS: In 2020, Mexican production was hampered by delays in supplies from China due to worldwide demand and rail blockades in western Mexico. According to UN trade statistics, Mexico imported 394,731 bicycles from China in 2018 which represents 83 percent of total imports.
