•DEATHS: The number of coronavirus deaths in Mexico relative to the size of the population has now surpassed that of Italy and Sweden with 598.47 coronavirus deaths per one million, according to data collected by Our World in Data, a nonprofit research team based at Oxford University.

•NUMBERS: As of late Tuesday, Mexico has officially reported 738,163 coronavirus cases and 77,163 deaths. Mexico City accounts for a 16% share of total confirmed cases. Mexico is the fourth country with the most coronavirus deaths in absolute terms.

•DELAY: “When will the final statistics on deaths from Covid-10 be ready? Certainly, a couple of years after the first year of the pandemic,” Mexico’s undersecretary of health, Hugo López-Gatell, said Sunday. Officials have admitted previously that the the number is an undercount.

•COUNTRIES: Close behind the UK and the US, Mexico could soon enter the list of top ten countries by number of coronavirus deaths per one million people despite the delay in counts. Perú leads all countries with 980.35 deaths per million, a grim podium for the country’s ever-worsening health crisis.
