•MASSACRES: Mexico has experienced at least 45 massacres in 2020 where five or more people were murdered in a single event according to a recount by Mexico City’s Reforma newspaper. The number contradicts President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s claim that massacres have ceased.

•GEOGRAPHY: Involving a total of 320 victims in at least 20 states, massacres in Mexico this year include the June’s attack against rehab center in the city of Irapuato where 26 people died. According to experts, massacres of this size are only possible given the weakness of local police in Mexico.

•PROTOCOLS: “Due to the circumstances where these massacres occur, it is difficult to have first respondent protocols and take all precautions based on forensic work so that we can truly protect the
chain of custody. The great problem with this is that it sometimes happens in front of the police,””, said Juan Salgado, specialist at the World Justice Project.

•INDIGENOUS: Just last June, 17 people were killed in the Pacific coast municipality of San Mateo del Mar in Oaxaca state. According to authorities, the victims were ambushed by an organized crime group but advocates argue that supporters of local authorities were involved in the attack.
