DEATH: With an average of 3,673 deaths per week, coronavirus is now the number one cause of death in Mexico surpassing coronary heart disease, diabetes and kidney disease, according to estimates by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington (IHME).

NUMBERS: As of late Wednesday, Mexico has officially reported 610,967 coronavirus cases and 65,816 deaths. Mexico City accounts for a 16% share of total confirmed cases. The neighboring state of State of Mexico follows in second place with a 11% share of cases.

HOSPITALS: “There are difficulties in the access to hospital systems, which put at risk the most vulnerable people, like those with low income, the elderly and people with preexisting conditions”, said Julio Frenk, former Mexican Health Minister and current president of the University of Miami.

DISEASES: Coronavirus will remain the top cause of death in Mexico at least until December, according to Rafael Lozano, an expert at IHME. Average weekly deaths for other diseases in Mexico are way lower: coronary heart disease (2,044), diabetes (1,420) and kidney disease (1,395).
