REOPENING: Despite being one of the hardest hit countries by the coronavirus pandemic, Mexico’s health authorities argue that according to current forecast models the entire school system across the 32 Mexican states could reopen sometime in November.

NUMBERS: As of late Tuesday, Mexico has officially reported 606,036 coronavirus cases and 65,241 deaths. Mexico City accounts for a 16% share of total confirmed cases. The neighboring state of State of Mexico follows in second place with a 11% share of cases.

DYNAMIC: “This does not work by promising (specific) dates. No one should stay with that expectation. It is done based on a dynamic assessment”, said Hugo López-Gatell, the government’s coronavirus point person. There are 35.5 million students in Mexico, per government estimates.

LETALITY: Currently the eight country with most cases, Mexico’s coronavirus letality rate is the highest among hardest hit countries (10.8%), per data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. Projections by the University of Washington show Mexico reaching 100,000 deaths by November 6.
