• FATALITIES: The risk of death for coronavirus among health workers in Mexico is higher than in countries like the US and Brazil mostly due to the lack of adequate protective equipment and training, according to a new public health study.
• IMPACT: Since the beginning of the pandemic and until June 9, a total 385 Mexican health workers had died of coronavirus. The percentage of health workers deaths relative to total coronavirus deaths (2.5%) is higher than in countries like the US (0.5%) and Brazil (1.2%), per the estimates.
• DELAY: “(Protective equipment) took a long time to arrive. Although we had two and a half months (of preparation), the first equipments happened thanks to private donations to (public) medical units”, said researcher Salomón Chertorivski, a member of Signos Vitales and former health official
• FLIGHTS: Despite Mexico confirmed its first coronavirus case on February 28, the Mexican government was only able to arrange the first massive importation of protective equipment from China on April 7th. By then, public health workers have already denounced insufficiencies.
