• RECORD: The López Obrador administration’s tactics to exercise increasing pressure on Mexican taxpayers has yielded a record level in tax delinquency collection during the first fourth months of 2020, according to new data by Mexico’s revenue service agency (SAT).

• NUMBERS: Without counting major payment settlements reached in May with several large companies, SAT authorities have been able to collect the equivalent of US $967 million in alleged tax debts between January and April of this year. The figure is 188% larger in 2019.

• EXCESSIVE: “In many cases there is pressure for taxpayers who pay regularly. The authorities send these messages in a general way”, said Juan Carlos Bojorges, head of the Mexican College of Public Accountants (CCPM), adding that in some cases the pressure can be excessive.

• HISTORICAL: The López Obrador tactics during the first months of 2020 has yielded a larger amount than in 2013, when the government offered tax amnesty on pending surcharges. In February, telecom firm America Móvil agreed to pay charges for the equivalent of around US $366 million.
