• INJUNCTION: Two Mexican environmental groups won a preliminary injunction that temporarily suspends measures in the electricity sector by the López Obrador administration that give preference to power produced by Mexico’s state-owned utility (CFE) over renewables companies.

• ENVIRONMENT: On Friday, federal judge Juan Pablo Gómez Fierro issued the injunction in favor of Greenpeace and CEMDA halting the so called “power reliability policy” issued earlier this month. Among other things, the groups argue CFE’s power depends on burning fossil fuels

• CITIZENS: “This is a citizen victory in terms of protecting the human right to a healthy environment, protection of health, participation in environmental matters and legality”, said Greenpeace after the preliminary injunction was issued today. The administration has not filed an appeal yet.

• BUSINESS: Without necessarily agreeing entirely with the groups’ arguments, Mexican and foreign investors in the electric sector have argued that the López Administration’s measures lack economic sense and moreover are in violation of Mexico’s international commitments.
