• EPIDEMIC: Despite plans for reopening in June, the Mexico City metro area remains a key area of concern given its high coronavirus contagion level, according to Mexico’s health authorities. Last week, the country experienced its highest weekly number of confirmed coronavirus deaths.

• ACTIVITY: “There are several states that are in high epidemic activity, that includes Mexico City, the Mexico (City) valley area and its neighboring municipalities,” said Hugo López Gatell, Mexico’s undersecretary of health. The Mexico City metro area is home to 21 million people.

• NUMBERS: As of late Monday, Mexico has officially reported 51,633 coronavirus cases and 5,332 total deaths. Mexico City accounts for approximately a 27% share of total confirmed cases. The neighboring state, State of Mexico, follows in second place with a 16% share of cases.

• BEDS: “The maximum peak (of intensive care beds) that could be required per week would be somewhere between the end of May and the beginning of June. As you know this is not an exact science, these are estimates”, said Mexico City mayor Claudia Sheinbaum.
