• UNCONSTITUTIONAL: In a rare unanimous decision, Mexico’s Supreme Court declared unconstitutional a law passed by the Baja California’s state Congress in 2019 that would have allowed Governor Jaime Bonilla to extend his term from 2021 to 2024.
• REFORM: Bonilla -who ran under the Morena party banner- was sworn in on November 1, 2019 after winning the Gubernatorial election in June. Immediately afterwards, local deputies in the Baja California state Congress passed a law extending Bonilla’s term.
• FRAUD: “Altering the conditions under which an election was held, as it happened here, constitutes a true post-election fraud”, Supreme Court president, Arturo Zaldívar, stated on Monday. Due to the coronavirus emergency, the Supreme Court held its meeting today via video conference.
• PARTIES: At least three national opposition parties -including the PRI, the PAN and the PRD- had presented judicial resources before the Supreme Court questioning the Baja California’s state Congress action’s constitutionality. Governor Bonilla’s term will end on October 2021.
