• MURDERS: Despite the coronavirus emergency, the total number of homicides across Mexico is still significantly higher than the number of confirmed deaths stemming from the pandemic outbreak showing that violence has not subdued, Mexican government data shows.

• NUMBERS: According to Mexican security reports, a total of 3,381 murders were recorded between March 25 and May 3. During the same period of time, Mexico officially reported 2,270 coronavirus deaths. In the central state of Guanajuato, 33 people died from coronavirus and 458 died from homicide.

• EPIDEMIC: Mexico recorded its most violent year in 2019 with more than 34,500 murders. After a brief respite, murders began to climb again in March of this year with a total of 3,000 victims. More than 10% of homicides during March occurred in Guanajuato.

• PROPAGANDA: “Various criminal organizations have notably increased their propaganda and social involvement actions by distributing basic goods in at least 12 states”, a group of more than 30 Mexican civil society groups alerted on Tuesday demanding action from the government.
