• ACCELERATION: The coronavirus outbreak in Mexico has accelerated with the average daily number of confirmed cases jumping from 965 two weeks ago to 1,339 now. However, this happens at the same time that number of tests has dropped from 5,902 on April 28 to 4,202 on May 4.
• NUMBERS: As of late Monday, Mexico has officially reported 24,905 coronavirus cases and 2,271 deaths. Mexico City accounts for approximately a 27% share of the total confirmed cases. Despite the numbers, Mexican health authorities argue that the epidemic is now slowing down.
• COUNTERPOINT: “The epidemic is slowing down…We have flattened the curve”, said Hugo López-Gatell, Mexico’s undersecretary of health in charge of managing the response. According to López Gatell, the doubling of confirmed coronavirus cases is now every 6 days and not 5 as before.
• LAGGING: One of Latin America’s largest countries, Mexico is lagging behind in testing per 100,000. Using Our World in Data numbers, Perú (pop. 63 million) reached 1,112 tests per 100,000 on May 2. Meanwhile, Mexico (pop. 129 million) had 63 tests per 100,000 on the same date.
