• PEAK: President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Wednesday that at least five regional outbreaks remain the main focus of the country’s coronavirus response on the day that Mexico is supposed to hit pandemic peak. Health authorities projected May 6 would be peak day.
• REGIONAL: “The pandemic…is not happening in all parts of the country equally”, said López Obrador. The five regional outbreaks are the Mexico City area, the Caribbean resort of Cancún, the border city of Tijuana, the northwestern city of Culiacán and the southeastern city of Villahermosa.
• NUMBERS: As of late Tuesday, Mexico has officially reported 26,025 coronavirus cases and 2,507 deaths. Mexico City accounts for approximately a 26% share of total confirmed cases. The neighboring state, State of Mexico, follows in second place with a 16% share of cases.
• CONCERNS: Having declared a nationwide health emergency since March 30, Mexican authorities are relatively optimistic about the current epidemic phase. The central city of Puebla, the Gulf city of Veracruz and the central state of Morelos are being monitored for potential worsening of conditions.
