• ACCELERATION: The number of coronavirus cases in Mexico surpassed the 10,000 mark on Wednesday as the country entered the most severe phase of the pandemic. Also, for the first time, the government’s official count of confirmed cases surpassed 1,000.

• NUMBERS: As of late Wednesday, Mexico has officially reported 10,544 coronavirus cases and 970 deaths. Mexico City accounts for approximately a 26% share of the total confirmed cases. The neighboring state, State of Mexico, is number two in total confirmed cases, with a 15% share.

• INDIGENOUS: Far from the Mexico City metro area, four municipalities in the poverty-stricken Mountainous region of Guerrero state (Tlapa, Huamuxtitlán, Xochihuehuetlán and, Xalpatláhuac) are under alert given 14 confirmed coronavirus cases in their communities.

• ALERT: “Here in the Mountain region (Guerrero), there is no way to face this pandemic, because the people in the indigenous communities are very vulnerable. This due to their high degree of malnutrition and also lack of medical infrastructure”, said Abel Barrera, a human rights activist.
