• GOVERNMENT: The Mexican government is eyeing a return to normalcy on June 1st if mitigation measures against coronavirus are successful. Today, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that economic activity and schools across the country could resume on that date.
• EMERGENCY: On March 30th, Mexico issued a health emergency declaration, mandating the suspension of non-essential activities. Today, government experts said that some areas of the country could lift mitigation measures on May 17, but warned that the worst is yet to come.
• RECOVERY: “Municipalities with high transmission should wait until May 30th. And on June 1st in all cases we will restart gradually and in an organized way, economic, social and public life activities”, said Hugo López Gatell, Mexico’s undersecretary of health.
• TESTING: Some experts argue increasing testing capacity is key to determine when to resume activities after the coronavirus lockdown. Mexico (pop. 125 million) has conducted 42,702 coronavirus tests as of April 15. Meanwhile, the US (pop. 328 million) has conducted 3.2 million tests as of April 16.
