• VENTILATORS: The availability of mechanical ventilators to deal with a potential increase in the number of coronavirus patients in intensive care worries Mexican specialists given that Mexico’s healthcare sector only has 5,523 units compared to the 200,000 units available in the US.

• NUMBERS: As of late Wednesday evening, Mexico reported 475 confirmed coronavirus cases across al 32 states and the total number of deaths is 6. The Mexican Health Ministry has estimated that only 1,820 patients will require a mechanical ventilator if trends remain stable.

• FLATTENING: “If the curve is flattened they could be enough, but if the mitigation measures fail, there will be deficiencies (in accessing to ventilators)”, said Malaquías López Cervantes, researcher at Mexico’s National University (UNAM) Medical School.

• G-20: Mexican Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, said that Mexico demanded that countries around the world could work in a joint initiative against the hoarding of medical supplies, in particular mechanical ventilators, during a Virtual G-20 Leaders’ Summit of which Mexico is part.
