• WAVE: The recent wave of violence in the border city of Ciudad Juárez (pop. 1.3 million) in the state of Chihuahua spiked over the weekend with at least 14 murders happening across different areas of the city including an attack in the outskirts of the city where three women were killed.
• ATTACK: After a week marked by several fatal attacks against law enforcement in Ciudad Juárez , state authorities reported that a group of gunmen opened fired on Sunday against a party in the El Sauzal area -the eastern outskirts of the city- leaving 3 women killed and 10 others were hurt.
• NUMBERS: According to data from Chihuahua’s Attorney General office, Ciudad Juárez saw 1,499 murders in 2019 murders with the vast majority (above 1,300) were males. The El Sauzal area is just 5 minutes from the international border with El Paso, Texas on the other side.
• WARNING: The US Government is advising not to travel to any country abroad including Mexico due to the coronavirus emergency. The El Sauzal area -where the triple homicide happened- is outside the boundaries of travel for US Government employees during normal days.
