• OPENING: French multinational hotel group Accor has opened its first Sofitel branded property in Mexico along Paseo de la Reforma -one of the most iconic avenues in Mexico City- which it hopes will be the first investment into the country’s luxury hospitality sector, a company executive said.

• NUMBERS: According to recent city data, more than 13.9 million tourists stayed in Mexico City hotels in 2019. The total number of tourists staying in 5-star hotels was 4 million. Currently, out of the 625 hotels in Mexico City, 99 of them are in the 5-star category.

• LUXURY: “We want to develop a luxury brand here. We are open to investors who see opportunity in the brand. We are interested in destinations such as (the cities of) Monterrey, Chihuahua, Cancún”, said Sylvain Chauvet, general manager of the 275-room Sofitel Mexico City Reforma.

• STATISTICS: According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, Mexico City is the eighth-largest city worldwide measured by GDP linked to travel and tourism activities (USD 24.6 billion in 2018). Mexico City is ahead of cities like Tokyo, Las Vegas, London, an Hong Kong.
