• APPROVAL: President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s approval rating fell from 78% last March to 59% today with most Mexicans disapproving its handling of security and the economy, according an opinion poll by Mexico City’s Reforma newspaper
• VIOLENCE: Since taking office in December 2018, López Obrador term has seen a stagnant economy and record number of homicides. According to the poll, the percentage of Mexicans who see insecurity as the country’s main problem (70%) is at its highest since 1994.
• RESULTS: “The majority of the population does not see results on security or the economy by the current government and also perceives a bad management of the healthcare issue”, said Lorena Becerra, Reforma’s head of polling. The survey was conducted among 1,200 Mexican adults.
• CONTEXT: López Obrador’s approval rating had already fell to 68% in December 2019. Still, a majority of Mexicans still has high expectations for the reminder of the President’s six years in office particularly in the areas of education, health, poverty reduction and quality of life.
