• CASES: Mexico’s health authorities confirmed Sunday a total of five coronavirus cases detected in the country all of them involving people who recently traveled to the Northern Italian region of Lombardy. So far, there have been no reported deaths from coronavirus in Mexico.
• STUDENTS: The latest case of people in Mexico hit by the severe acute respiratory syndrome was a 18-year old student in the southern state of Chiapas who had traveled to the Italian city of Milan. Previously, a 20-year old student in the northern state of Coahuila tested positive for coronavirus.
•  DETECTION: “The case was identified not because she had symptoms, but because when investigating the contacts of the (other) sick person…she told us that a fellow (student) had been on the same trip in Northern Italy”, said Hugo López Gatell, Mexico’s undersecretary of health,
• RESOURCES: López Gatell dismissed the need for a USD 1.2 billion emergency fund as proposed by Mexican congressional leaders to fight coronavirus saying Mexico’s public health system has historically been underfunded but said the government was ready for the challenge.
