• UPTICK: Mexico saw an uptick in the number of women kidnapped in Mexico in January reaching a total of 37, according to the government’s most recent data. Ten of the cases occurred in the central State of Mexico, the most populated in the country (pop. 17.3 million).
• NUMBERS: After reaching a monthly highpoint of 49 in April of last year,  the number of women kidnapped in Mexico fell all the way to 25 in November. However, the new January numbers may show an uptick in cases amidst a violence crisis hitting several parts of the country.
• ALERT: Last October, the Mexican federal government activated “gender alert” mechanism due to a crisis in the number of missing women in seven municipalities of the State of Mexico: Toluca, Ecatepec, Nezahualcóyotl, Cuautitlán Izcalli, Chimalhuacán, Ixtapaluca and Valle de Chalco.
• PROTEST: Earlier this month, the kidnapping and murder of a 7-year-old girl in Mexico City provoked outrage across the country. Several feminists groups are planning a major protest on March 8th and a national strike on March 9th to protest violence against women.
