• DINNER: More than 200 of Mexico’s most important business leaders attended an unusual invitation for dinner, during which Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador passed a hat to collect millions of dollars, which will be used to finance the purchase of medical equipment.

• LOTTERY: While dining chipilín tamales and hot chocolate at Mexico’s presidential palace, López Obrador asked business leaders to commit themselves to donations of up to USD 10 million in the form of lottery tickets, where the original top prize was the presidential jet.

• BILLIONAIRES: Among those who attended the dinner were some of Mexico’s most prominent billionaires, including telecom mogul Carlos Slim, businesswoman Maria Asunción Aramburuzabala and Emilio Azcárraga Jean, chairman of Grupo Televisa, the Mexican media giant.

• TAMALES: “These are the most expensive tamales of my life”, said Bosco de la Vega, owner of a large agribusiness conglomerate, who serves as president of Mexico’s farm lobby (CNA) and one of the attendees who pledged to give money during the dinner.
