• CARRIER: Ultra low-cost airline Volaris remained at the top of Mexico’s domestic market for the second year in a row increasing its market share to 31.3% in 2019 in passengers transported (16.6 million) leaving Aeroméxico in second place with 24.2%, according to new government data.

• OPTIONS: “Many people became disillusioned with (discount carrier) Interjet and are not willing to pay for flying with Aeromexico. But they are not encouraged to travel by (low cost) VivaAerobus. So what is the next low cost: Volaris”, said Juan Antonio José, an aviation industry analyst.

• US ROUTES: Founded in 2006, Volaris reaches 23 US airports and has a codeshare agreement with Denver-based Frontier Airlines. Volaris’ main hubs are Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Tijuana. It also serves some US destinations from Cancún, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo San Lucas.

• COMPETITION: “More impressively, six to eight percent of our customers still claim to be first-time flyers. On 41 percent of our routes, Volaris is the only airline competing against buses (in Mexico)”, said Volaris CEO Enrique Beltranena during a luncheon in New York City last month.
