• INDUSTRY: Mexico’s top farm lobby (CNA) sees an opportunity in the effort to decriminalize the possession and production of marijuana. Following years of domestic debate and legal precedent by the Supreme Court, the Mexican agriculture sector says it’s ready to support a legal industry.
• SUCCESSFUL: “We are prepared for the (marijuana) industry, the land is there…The only thing I can guarantee you is that it will be much more successful than producing grains. There would be more options for small, medium and large farmers”, said Bosco de la Vega, head of the CNA.
• DRAFT: Currently, the Mexican Senate is discussing a bill that would decriminalize the possession and production of marijuana. The allowed quantity for personal consumption will be established at 28 grams (1 ounce) up from the currently allowed 5 grams (0.17 ounces).
• EVOLUTION: According to a survey by a Mexican Senate think tank, 45% of Mexicans believe marijuana should be decriminalized and regulated entirely, while 42% reject the notion. Some 5% of Mexicans agree with medicinal marijuana but not with its recreational use.
