• INCREASE: Wind power generation capacity in Mexico kept its upward trend in 2019, with annual numbers recording 71 wind energy plants and more than 6,200 megawatts (MW), according to the Mexican Wind Energy Association (AMDEE).

• CAPACITY: Despite López Obrador’s Administration seeing renewables as questionable, Mexican Wind Energy installed capacity was 7.5%. Mexican producers are hoping that the Government makes some sort of transmission capacity move to allow them to take electricity where it is needed.

• TRANSMISSION: “Different areas of the country regard it difficult to have (transmission) capacity to evacuate the power they generate…This makes them unable to accommodate projects in areas where there is high wind potential due to saturation”, said Leopoldo Rodríguez, head of AMDEE.

• STATES: According to industry numbers, the southern state of Oaxaca is the top producer of wind in Mexico, with almost half of the total production installed in 2019 (2,700 megawatts, MW). The number two producer in Mexico is the Gulf state of Tamaulipas (1,100 megawatts, MW) in 2019.
