• FALL: Mexican auto sales fell to a 5-year low in 2019 according to new annual numbers by Mexico’s statistics agency (INEGI) affected by a weak domestic economy and new transportation trends among other factors that will remain through 2020.

• NUMBERS: The total number of auto sales in Mexico fell at a 7.7% annual pace from 1.42 million units in 2018 to 1.31 million units in 2019 following a downward trend that started in 2017. Mexico’s auto dealers association (AMDA) expects to hit rock bottom this year.

• FORECAST: “The expectation for 2020 continues to be located in negative terrain. We are estimating that a fall (in sales) close to 2% may occur during the year in the number of new vehicles sold in Mexico”, said Guillermo Rosales, head of AMDA.

• COMPANIES: The auto company with the largest market share in 2019 was Nissan with 20.3% followed by GM with 16.1% and by Volkswagen with 13.8%. Other relevant players in the Mexican are Toyota (8%), Kia (7.3%) and Honda (5.5%)
