• PLANS: Mexico’s migration agency (INM) will move ahead with plans to create a registry of the more than 500,000 foreign residents living in Mexico continuing an effort than began under the previous Government to modernize its immigration system.

• FEATURES: The registry of foreign residents living in Mexico would include facts like name, sex, marital status, address, occupation and even biometric information when available, according to a 2018 Ministry of the Interior document when the plan was conceived.

• NUMBERS: The total number of foreign residents living in Mexico reached 537,000 in 2019, according to data presented in December by INM. The number is more than double the number of foreign residents in Mexico in 2009.

• NATIONALITIES: INM’s shows that the number of permanent resident cards issued in 2019 reached 35,210 in November. The top nationality receiving permanent resident cards in 2019 was Venezuelans (6,669) followed by Americans (4,504).
