• RECORD: Mexican immigration authorities have taken into custody a 172,748 migrants between January and November of 2019 which represents a 38% increase compared to the same period of last year reflecting a record year for irregular migration mainly from Central America.
• STATES: Like in previous years, at least 50% of migrants arrests in 2019 were made at two of the four States along Mexico’s southern border, Chiapas and Tabasco). The month with the highest number of arrests was June, the same month when Mexico increased its interdiction effort.
• STATIONS: Meanwhile, INAMI informed that it had invested USD 17.6 million this year in improvements to 15 deteriorated detention centers around the country given long standing criticism by civil society groups regarding the conditions of detention facilities.
• CRITICISM: “Despite widespread concerns about health conditions and allegations of mistreatment, the Mexican government continues to resist or restrict independent monitoring of conditions at…detention facilities”, said WOLA, a US human rights NGO, in a report this week.
