• NEW SITES: The US Department of State reissued its travel advisory for Mexico in which it added two areas in the northern part of the country where US citizens need to reconsider traveling to: the southern tip of the state of Sonora (including the port of Guaymas) and the Fresnillo area in the state of Zacatecas.
• GUAYMAS: One of Mexico’s municipalities with the highest murder rate, the US launched in July a temporary security alert for Guaymas (pop. 158,000). Yesterday, it added neighboring Empalme along with the cities of Obregon and Navojoa. Americans may only travel to the town of Alamos by air.
• FRESNILLO: Despite not being among Mexico’s fifty municipalities with the most murders, Fresnillo (pop. 230,000) in Zacatecas saw recently a recent spike in violence when gunmen killed five police officers last November. A silver mining town, the US advises to only transit without stopping.
• DO NOT TRAVEL: Due to crime, the US Government advises Americans to not travel to four Mexican Pacific Coastal States: Sinaloa, Colima, Michoacán, and Guerrero. This “do not travel” advisory extends to Tamaulipas state in the Gulf of Mexico where it also warns of kidnapping.
