• COURTS: Mexican federal courts granted the renewables sector a win against a rule change by the López Obrador Government that would have given the state-owned utility (CFE) access to the market for “clean energy certificates” (CELs) by expanding it to hydro and geothermal legacy plants.
• RELIEF: “These…measures stop the violation of contractual stability, the destruction of assets value of renewable energy projects already in operation and the attempt to modify the law by administrative means in detriment to the detriment of investors”, the wind and solar energy associations said.
• RESOURCES: After the rule change in October, at least 20 renewables companies presented legal resources against its implementation and at least two of them had been successful; a report by Bloomberg said that one of the winning suit was presented by France’s Electricité de France.
• CRITICISM: Late last month, the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) openly criticized the López Obrador Administration’s energy policies saying that the change of focus away of fostering renewables they threatened to reverse Mexico’s action against greenhouse gas emissions.
