• SUPERVISION: The Mexican Government agreed to include two bilateral mechanisms under the new US, Mexico, Canada trade agreement (USMCA) allowing the monitoring of Mexican union elections, a concession to gain Democratic support for ratification in the US Congress.

• CEREMONY: Along Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister and the US Trade Representative, President Andrés López Obrador hosted Tuesday the signing ceremony of the Protocol of Amendments to the USMCA after months of negotiations between the Trump Administration and Democrats in the US House of Representatives.

• RESOURCES: Also, the deal directs mayor resources for the Executive Branch to establish a body to monitor how Mexico is implementing its landmark labor justice reforms the Protocol of Amendments to the USMCA adding “attachés” rather than unilateral inspectors as the US proposed.

• DISPUTES: “What was agreed … is that specifically for labor matters when they are related to elections (to choose union leaders) …or for approval of a collective contract … a mechanism would have to be formed:….panels for dispute resolution”, said Mexican negotiator Jesús Seade.
