Negotiators meet in Mexico as deal on USMCA awaits

• SUMMIT: Top negotiators from the US, Mexico and Canada are meeting in Mexico City on Tuesday hoping to finalize adjustments to a modernized regional trade deal signed in 2018 (known by its acronym as USMCA) that could allow move forward its ratification process in the US Congress.

• PROGRESS: “There will be a meeting of the negotiating teams of Mexico, the United States and Canada to make public the progress reached on the modernization of the Free Trade Agreement between the three countries”, Mexico’s Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, said on Twitter on Monday.

• HIGH LEVEL: With US Trade Representative, Robert Lighthizer, traveling to Mexico along with Canadian Deputy Prime Minister, Chrystia Freeland, negotiators are hoping that finalize a deal in Mexico City that quells longstanding US Democrats concerns around labor and other issues.

• TRUTH: “We’re at the moment of truth”, said US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, during a late night event organized by the Wall Street Journal where she made clear that a couple of meetings were still needed Tuesday morning to finalize a potential deal to push ratification process.
