• RECORD: President López Obrador has deployed the Mexican military at record levels compared to his previous two predecessors with at least 62,954 troops positioned across Mexico in tasks that include the fight against criminal groups all the way to disaster relief, according to Government data.

• PREVIOUSLY: Despite the President’s rhetoric, troops deployment is 14.5% higher than the 54,980 number used under Enrique Peña Nieto in 2018. Even more, the use of troops for all kinds of chores is 19.4 higher than the 52,690 troops deployed back under Felipe Calderón in 2011.

• GROWTH: During the past month, the Mexican military increased in 38% its number of troops in the northwestern states of Sinaloa and Durango. Back in October, the Mexican military suffered a defeat after a failed operation to capture one of drug lord Joaquín “Chapo” Guzmán’s failed in Sinaloa.

• IRAPUATO: Despite being the seat of one of Mexico’s twelve military regions with more than 3,000 troops, the city of Irapuato in the central state of Guanajuato is experiencing one of its worst security crisis in history with criminal groups fighting over the stolen fuel, drugs and extortion illegal markets.
