• POLL: The number of Mexicans saying they have bought counterfeit goods at some point  reached at least 85% with footwear, music, cell phones and video games as the most sought after pirated merchandise, a new poll by Mexico’s patent and trademark body (IMPI) revealed.

• RECORD: A problem worldwide, a Mexican business group umbrella organization (CONCANACO) estimated on Thursday that consumption of counterfeit goods in Mexico amounts to 1.2% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), more than USD 2.2 billion in total value.

• ORIGIN: The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) estimated earlier this year that the highest number of counterfeit shipments being seized around the world originates from East Asia with China and Hong Kong at the top of the ranking making up at least 70% of total.

• ENFORCEMENT: “(We need) to enforce the legal framework…along with effective customs control plus the use of technology in inspections at ports of entry into the country all the way through distribution”, said José Manuel López Campos, the head of CONCANACO.
