AMLO urges Pelosi not to delay USMCA ratification

• RATIFICATION: Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador urged Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, not to delay the ratification of the new US, Mexico, Canada Trade Agreement (USMCA) arguing that Mexico has fulfilled its promise of funding the implementation of the new labor reform.

• BUDGET: The first installment of a USD 900 million four year plan, Mexico’s Congress approved last wee a USD 72.3 million fund for the implementation of the landmark labor reform. This is slightly higher than the USD 69.2 million AMLO promised US Democrats in a letter back in October.

• COMMITMENT: “It was agreed that there would be a special budget for the new labor law…as Democratic Party legislators and leaders in the US labor movement suggested. We fulfilled that commitment”, López Obrador said adding he will write a new letter to Pelosi.

• ENFORCEMENT: Signed on November 2018, the USMCA has been sitting in the US Congress while Democrats carry out negotiations with the Trump Administration on how to deal particularly with labor laws enforcement in Mexico; late Monday, Pelosi said that a deal could be within reach.
