• PLANE: The López Obrador Administration granted political asylum in Mexico to Evo Morales, who last week resigned from his post as President of Bolivia, arguing that his life was in danger after the political turmoil in that country and even sent a Mexican Air Force jet to pick him up.
• AUSTERITY: With its original cost at USD $55 million, the Mexican Government had listed the Gulfstream G-550 business jet aircraft as part of a fleet of 72 airplanes set to be auctioned as part of an austerity campaign by President López Obrador to eliminate any kind of Government excess.
• HUMANITARIAN REASONS: “The Mexican Foreign Ministry has decided to grant political asylum to Mr. Evo Morales for humanitarian reasons and by virtue of the urgent situation in Bolivia, where his life and integrity are at risk”, Mexican Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, said Monday.
• CRISIS: Morales resigned Sunday from Bolivia’s Presidency on Sunday after weeks of domestic turmoil that had its origins in deeply flawed Presidential elections -according to recent report by the Organization of American States (OAS)- that would have let Morales continue in power after 14 years.
