• OPACITY Mexico’s military classified as ‘reserved’ all information surrounding the construction of a new commercial airport at the Santa Lucia Air Force Base (proj. capacity: 20 million passengers annually) intended to serve Mexico City preventing any disclosure for 5 years.

• NATIONAL SECURITY In response to a civil society transparency request, a Ministry of Defense’s internal committee argued that all information regarding the design, financing, construction and operations of the new Santa Lucia airport ought to be withheld on the grounds of national security

• PERCEIVED RISK “The disclosure of this information represents a real risk, because it could be used by members of organized crime to commit crimes of espionage, terrorism, sabotage, treason, genocide, within the national territory”, the committee said.

• CONTROVERSIAL Projected to open in 2022 as part of a 3 prong airport system, the new airport in Santa Lucia has being mired in controversy due to experts doubts regarding its viability and following the cancellation of larger airport in Texcoco (proj. capacity: 100 million passengers annually).
