• INVESTMENT Mexico’s energy regulatory commission (CRE) approved 25 new power generation projects for a total value of US 9.5 billion that would be developed by the private sector despite signs that the new Mexican Government would seek to limit participation in the market.

• POWER Total installed capacity for the 25 approves projects is 5,191 MW with the largest projects being two large solar parks by Alternativa Energética de México in the Guaymas municipality of Sonora and the Pinos municipality of Zacatecas with an installed capacity of 585.2 MW each.

• LIMITS Despite being an open market, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said earlier this month that he would try to cap private sector participation in power generation at 46% of the market while CFE -the State-owned utility- would be able to retain the remaining 54%.

• LEGAL FRAMEWORK According to legal experts like attorney Jorge Arrambide, the López Obrador Administration would have to seek Constitutional changes before it could establish limits on the power generation market since the 2015 energy reform opened it to private investment.
