• SEIZURES Mexico’s tax authority reported record seizures of illegally introduced merchandise during 2019 due to the rolling out of the new customs law that expanded the inspection terms and renovated attitude by the new Mexican Government.

• HOW According to the most recent quarterly report by the Tax Administration Service (SAT), the total amount of seizures during the first half of 2019 reached 22.3 million pesos (USD 1.1 billion). This is a number never seen before with the previous record in 2017 recorded 13.9 million (USD 694 million).

• EXPERT Expert Oscar Rueda Thomas says that a big chunk of the newly improved seizures at customs can be traced to a more zealous position by the new Mexican Government but more importantly to a new customs law that expanded from one to five days the time for inspections

• NUMBER: Mexico has a total of 49 customs houses all across the country. Most of them are long the land border with the US (a total of 19). At the Guatemala & Belize to the South there’s a total of 2 customs houses. There are also 17 offices at maritime ports and 11 offices in the interior.
