• RATIONING Due to a severe drought affecting at least 26% of Mexico’s territory, 11 States plus Mexico City have implemented some sort of water rationing due to the low levels in dams all across the country affecting particularly those States close to the Gulf of Mexico.
• VERACRUZ Having peaked on August 15 according to the country’s National Meteorological Service (SMN), drought conditions remain severe particularly for the Gulf state of Veracruz, Mexico’s third largest by population (8.1 million people), with 94% of its municipalities being affected.
• MEASURES Among the States implementing water rationing in some of its municipalities to face the drought are Baja California, San Luis Potosí, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Hidalgo, Querétaro, Chiapas, State of Mexico, Tabasco plus Mexico City.
• RANKINGS Back in August 2019, the World Resources Institute (WRI), an NGO based in Washington, DC, ranked Mexico at number 24 in its Water Risk Atlas facing a high water stress. The Atlas includes information for 164 countries, with a group of 17 nations facing extreme water stress.
