•RESIGNATION: The head of Mexico’s coronavirus vaccination effort stepped down Sunday only weeks after launching it. Mexican officials said that Miriam Veras Godoy resigned for personal reasons but sources told REFORMA newspaper she had differences of opinion on implementation.
•VACCINES: Mexico began its vaccination effort on Christmas Eve after the arrival of the first lots from Pfizer Inc. The López Obrador administration has prioritized public sector health workers but controversially it also included workers of social welfare programs close to the governing party.
•VACANCY: “Veras Godoy had an important task like that of anyone who participates in this operation. She does not leave a hole”, said health ministry official Ricardo Cortés. According to Our World in Data, Mexico is the country number 45 in vaccinations per capita.
•NUMBERS: As of late Sunday, Mexico has officially reported 1 million 641,428 coronavirus cases and 140,704 coronavirus deaths. Mexico is the fourth country in the world with the most coronavirus deaths in absolute terms.
