•DEATHS: Less than a week after surpassing 1 million confirmed cases, Mexico hit another grim milestone by surpassing 100,000 confirmed coronavirus deaths, according to government data. Back in June, Mexican officials had deemed a 60,000 deaths scenario catastrophic.
•NUMBERS: As of late Thursday, Mexico has officially reported 1,019,543 coronavirus cases and 100,104 deaths. Mexico City accounts for a 16% share of total confirmed cases. Mexico is the fourth country in the world with the most coronavirus deaths in absolute terms.
•UNUSUAL: “Today in Mexico we have 100,000 thousand people who have lost their life to Covid-19 and this is an amount from then unusual”, said Hugo López-Gatell, Mexico’s undersecretary of health. “Mexican society has no prior history of (such) an acute infectious disease”
•WORLDWIDE: Mexico becomes the fourth country worldwide to surpass 100,000 deaths, behind the United States, Brazil and India, according Johns Hopkins University data. However, Mexico has a population of roughly 125 million, significantly smaller than the other three.
