• EXTRADITION: The former head of Mexico’s state-owned company (Pemex), Emilio Lozoya, is set to arrive in Mexico late Thursday after being extradited from Spain and agreeing to cooperate with Mexican prosecutors who have presented bribery accuse
• CHARGES: Leading Pemex between 2012 and 2016, Lozoya was one of former President Enrique Peña Nieto’s closest aides. He is accused of receiving bribes from Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht and of fraudulently purchasing a fertilizer factory during his tenure.
• PRESIDENT: “(Lozoya) voluntarily accepted the extradition and there is a commitment that he will report on what happened”, said Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, insinuating that he could know about alleged bribes to legislators to pass Mexico’s energy reform in 2013
• WHATSAPP: Considered the most high-profile public corruption cases in recent history, Lozoya’s initial proceedings before the Mexican courts will not be open to the public due to the coronavirus pandemic. Judiciary authorities have said they will report about the case via Whats App messaging.
