• SEVERE: The US border state of Baja California is entering the most severe weeks of the coronavirus pandemic with hospitals nearing capacity, with very few ventilators available and insufficient medical staff. Baja California has officially reported 1,301 confirmed coronavirus cases and 167 deaths.
• NUMBERS: As of late Monday, Mexico has officially reported 15,529 coronavirus cases and 1,434 deaths. Mexico City accounts for approximately a 26% share of the total confirmed cases. The neighboring state, State of Mexico, is number two in total confirmed cases, with a 15% share.
• CRITICAL: “Starting on April 27 and during the first two (weeks) of May, it’s when we’ll have a rapid acceleration of the epidemiological curve in Baja California. It is when we will have more cases. Very difficult weeks are coming for Baja California”, said Alonso Pérez Rico, the state’s top health official.
• INFRASTRUCTURE: The two main public hospitals dealing with coronavirus cases are the IMSS regional number 1 unit in Tijuana and the general hospital in Mexicali. The IMSS hospital in Tijuana is at 83% capacity, meanwhile, the general hospital in Mexicali is at 90% capacity.
